In the centre of the old town of St. Gallen, the historic building at Löwengasse 3 has been extensively renovated and transformed into modern living space. The result is an ensemble of 17 rental flats that preserves the character of the building and at the same time is geared towards contemporary lifestyles. In this context, Ruf Design was able to plan and realise the kitchens for all units, from compact studios to spacious maisonettes with roof terraces.
Old town flats with character, Switzerland
Architecture and spatial effect
The building fabric has been sensitively modernised so that the charm of the old building and the new clarity form a harmonious whole. The flats benefit from generous window openings, high-quality oak parquet flooring and calm, light-coloured wall surfaces. The kitchens are a central component of the interior design and blend harmoniously into the overall concept.
Materiality and equipment
Each kitchen is equipped with a robust stainless steel worktop, combined with white fronts and striking black handles. The clean lines are complemented by understated white ceramic splashbacks. Electrolux appliances provide contemporary convenience, including induction, combi steamer and LED lighting for the worktops.
Gaining space through intelligent solutions
Space-saving folding beds have been integrated into the tall units in several flats. These disappear invisibly behind the kitchen fronts in everyday life and can be folded out effortlessly when required. This transforms the living and cooking area into a fully-fledged bedroom in a matter of moments.
Planning down to the last detail
The particular challenge lay in the millimetre-precise coordination of the kitchen furniture with the floor plan, appliances and additional fixtures. All elements were designed to make optimum use of the available space while maintaining a calm, uncluttered look.
Ruf Design Execution and design
Planning and realisation are by Ruf Design. The Löwengasse 3 project shows how high-quality kitchen solutions can be created, even in series production, that combine function, aesthetics and durability and thus characterise the entire living space.
